Southern Downtown Public Realm Master Plan
Streets and Open Spaces to support a Vibrant Mixed-Use Downtown Houston

Final rendering by Tara Mather

Downtown Houston is increasingly a stage for a diverse range of activities at all times of the day, rather than simply a distination for working commuters. Substantial amounts of new residential development in Downtown Houston - catalyzed by development incentives - have created a growing need for amenities that have not typically been provided in the area. However, it is equally clear that the network of Downtown streets and public spaces is still heavily mono-functional and designed primarily to channel commuters in and out of Downtown during rush hour.
The Southern Downtown Public Realm Master Plan presents a vision for the streets, parks and open spaces of Houston's southern Downtown / CBD that will support a diverse range of activities, development, and neighborhoods. The plan includes six strategies to improve the public realm, including concepts for a new park to anchor the emerging residential district.
